Severe Thunderstorms in the Central U.S.; Heavy Rainfall in the Southern Plains and the Carolinas

Scattered to numerous severe thunderstorms are expected to expand further east each day from the southern High Plains to the Tennessee and Lower Ohio Valleys to the Carolinas through Saturday. Key Messages

December 2024

  • December ended with temperatures about 10 to 15 degrees above average, with the warmest December on record recorded for many places!
  • There was a mix of above and below normal precipitation across the region, and much of it fell as rain.
  • Drought conditions have improved slightly over December.

2024 Annual

  • It was a very warm year with many records set, including a new annual record for warmest mean temperature at Duluth.
  • Precipitation was a mix between above and below normal, but snowfall as a whole was below normal across the region.

January and Late Winter / Early Spring Outlooks

  • The latest 8-14 day climate outlook favors above normal temperatures and near normal precipitation for mid-January.
  • There are roughly equal chances for above, below, or around normal temperatures and slightly leaning towards above normal precipitation from January through March.
