Severe Storms in Upper Midwest and Across the East; Record Breaking Heat Continues

Scattered severe thunderstorms are likely Thursday afternoon into Thursday night across portions of the Upper Midwest and from the Mid-Mississippi Valley into the Carolinas. Early season heat with likely record high temperatures will persist across the Southern tier of the U.S. today and will extend into the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast on Friday and Saturday.   • January 2019 was 3-4 degrees below normal.  Cedar Rapids and Moline had their all-time record low temperature broken on Jan 31st with values on -30 degrees and -33 degrees respectively.
  • Precipitation totals for January 2019 were a half inch to one and a half inches above normal.
  • Snowfall totals for January 2019 were about 15 to 20 inches above normal.
