Dangerous Heat in the Central and Eastern U.S.; Severe Thunderstorms in the Central U.S. and Northeast; Critical Fire Weather in the Four Corners

Dangerous, record-breaking heat will intensify across most of the central and eastern U.S this week. Heat indices will likely exceed 100 degrees. Severe thunderstorms are forecast from parts of the central High Plains into the Upper Midwest, and across parts of the Northeast. Overview

 

Severe thunderstorms developed across portions of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 10 2021. Storms produced mainly damaging winds in an environment with plentiful instability, with a gust estimated at 70 MPH occurring in Linn County. Damage to trees was reported in and around the Cedar Rapids metro east to Freeport IL. Some reports of hail were received as well, but were mainly at quarter-sized or less.
