National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

Overview

The tail end of June into early July 2026 brought a combination of high heat and moisture, and then numerous rounds of regional thunderstorms. Some of the highest rainfall amounts were seen just to our area's west (near Des Moines), north (southeast Minnesota), and east (Chicago metro area). Nonetheless, there were isolated amounts in excess of four inches in our area. The storms brought considerable cloud-to-ground lightning and regular wind gusts of 30-45 mph, with isolated severe winds and flash flooding.

Warmth & Moisture

Much of the week from June 28 through July 3 had afternoon heat index values greater than 100° for several hours. That was thanks to dew points residing frequently in the mid 70s, to at times upper 70s. As you can see by the chart to the right, those indicate a very humid to oppressive air mass.

Some nighttime low facts from the very warm stretch:

Dubuque:

  • The 77° observed for a low on June 30th was tied with four other dates (most recent 8/24/23) for the warmest low temperature on any day at Dubuque since 1947!
  • There were three straight days from June 29-July 1, where the temperature did not drop below 75°. The last time that happened in Dubuque was July 18-20, 2011, and that's the only other time this has happened since 1947!

Quad Cities (Moline):

  • There were three straight days the temperature did not drop below 76°. The last time that happened in the Quad Cities was actually last year (June 21-23, 2025), however before that was July 18-20, 2011.

Peak Heat Index Lists:   June 28-30   |    July 1-3

Note: the values on the maps below are taken from a combination of official and non-official airport observing sites each day and are not quality controlled.  Values over 110 degrees are suspect.
