April 28, 1893 Cisco Tornado

Additional research by Sam Shamburger, NWS Fort Worth lead forecaster

  • An extensive analysis of newspaper articles and historical maps of Eastland County land owners indicate this tornado began at least 6 miles southwest of Cisco where the first home damage was reported, and ended at least 5 miles north of Eastland where a Mrs. Ladd was killed. This gives a path length of 18 miles - about 5 miles longer than Grazulis indicated. Notably, at least two newspapers stated the tornado began in Callahan County near Battle Creek, which would give an even longer path around 24 or 25 miles, although there are no mentions of any damage in Callahan County.

  • The death toll remains somewhat uncertain as Grazulis mentioned. The Abilene newspaper stated 26 were killed, while most other newspapers reported 23 dead - although many others were still critically injured over a week later and may have died.
