Heavy Rainfall to Bring Flooding Threat to California; Heavy Snow in the Sierra

A strong atmospheric river will bring heavy rainfall to California through the holiday week. The heaviest rainfall is expected on Wednesday in the Los Angeles Basin. Flash and urban flooding is possible. A prolonged heavy snowfall is expected in the Sierra Nevada from the atmospheric river, raising concerns for major snow‐load impacts. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect from noon until 9 PM MDT today for the burn scar areas of the 416 and Burro fires in La Plata County encompassed in the area in green below. The Hermosa drainage is the greatest concern. Locations downhill and downstream from burned areas are very susceptible to flash flooding and debris flows, especially near steep terrain.
