2023 In-Person Storm Spotter Class Schedule

SKYWARN™ Storm Spotters are one of the greatest resources for the National Weather Service during severe weather. Our radar and satellite technology continues to improve; however, these instruments only tell us part of the story. Your reports complete the picture that our weather instruments are showing us. Without reports from our storm spotters, our mission to protect lives and property would be hindered.

The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Goodland, Kansas is once again offering in-person storm spotter classes in all 19 counties across the Tri-State Region. The first class of 2023 will be held Monday, February 27th in Goodland, KS. Classes will continue most Monday-Thursday evenings through early April until the final class on Wednesday, April 5th in Stratton, CO.  All classes will start at 6:30 PM local time and last approximately 2 hours.

For Spanish speakers, NWS Boulder/Denver will be offering two virtual classes from 6:00 - 8:00 PM MT on March 22nd and April 26th. Visit for more information about the Spanish Storm Spotter classes.

These interesting and informative classes are open to the public of all ages and offered free of charge. If you would like to serve your local community by becoming a volunteer storm spotter, or if you simply want to learn more about severe weather on the High Plains, we look forward to seeing you at one of these classes.

The 2023 Spotter Talks will include:

  • Highlights from 2022
  • New storm structure pictures and videos
  • How to stay safe when spotting
  • Distinguishing tornadoes from their look-alikes
  • Landspouts and how the National Weather Service in Goodland messages them
  • Participate in a spotter simulation

Your reports help save lives in your community! Any information you provide will help us protect you, your family, your neighbors, and your friends.
