Heavy Rainfall Along the Central Gulf Coast; Thunderstorms from the Plains to the Central Appalachians; Heat Across the East

A system in the Gulf could produce heavy rainfall and flash flooding for portions of the north-central Gulf Coast into Saturday. Widespread showers and thunderstorms are likely this afternoon into Friday from Central Plains into the mid-Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley and Central Appalachians. A Heat Advisory is in effect until 7 PM tonight for northwest and north central Alabama as well as portions of southern middle Tennessee. Heat index values of 102 to 109 degrees are expected during the peak afternoon hours. Overnight low temperatures will only drop into the middle 70s. Please practice heat safety especially when spending time outdoors and check on vulnerable individuals susceptible to heat illness.
Daily chances for showers and thunderstorms will continue this week, however, heat will be the primary concern. Locally heavy rain, gusty winds, and frequent lightning are threats posed by the stronger storms. Daily afternoon high temperatures should range from the upper 80s to mid 90s, with heat indices reaching the triple digits. A Heat Advisory is in effect today (Thursday) until 7pm. Additional heat products will be considered early to mid-next week. Please stay hydrated and use sun protection if spending time outdoors!
The Climate Prediction Center has outlooked the Tennessee Valley in a Medium Risk (40-60%) to High Risk (60-80%) for much above normal temperatures late next week. This means temperatures have a medium to high chance of reaching or exceeding 97 degrees during this period. Stay weather aware and up to date with the forecast!
