Overview

During the late evening of Thursday March 5th, a supercell thunderstorm tracked out of northern Oklahoma and into southern Kansas. As the storm crossed into Kansas, the rotation strengthened and eventually produced a few tornadoes over western Sumner County. The tornado damaged a few farm outbuildings and also damaged numerous trees. It was rated an EF-1 with a max wind speed of 109 mph.  Thankfully there were no injuries or fatalities.

Tornadoes

The Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale classifies tornadoes into the following categories:

Weak

65-85 mph
EF1
Moderate
86-110 mph
EF2
Significant
111-135 mph
EF3
Severe
136-165 mph
EF4
Extreme
166-200 mph
EF5
Catastrophic
200+ mph
ef-scale
Tornadoes that fail to impact any ratable damage indicators on the EF-Scale are rated EF-Unknown (EF-U)
