Heavy Rain in the Southern Appalachians; Heat Continues in the West; Monitoring Tropical Storm Erin

Heavy to excessive rain falling over the southern Appalachians may bring areas of flooding into Wednesday. Hot temperatures are in place through Wednesday across parts of the western U.S. and New England. Tropical Storm Erin is forecast to become a Hurricane by late this week as it moves westward across the central Atlantic Ocean. Monitor forecasts for any Puerto Rico or U.S. East Coast impacts. Unfortunately we are no longer able to generate the temperature and precipitation maps with the method we have been using for the past several years. We are working on finding another way to produce these maps each day.

In the meantime, check the "News Headlines" section at the top of our main web page on days that a precipitation map is generated (using a method we're currently experimenting with). We usually post the maps sometime between 11am and noon Eastern Time when precipitation has occurred over approximately the previous 24 hours.
