Severe Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall Across the Central Plains and Central Appalachians

Severe thunderstorms producing damaging winds, heavy rainfall, hail and possibly a few tornadoes will continue through tonight across portions of Kansas and Oklahoma. Heavy rainfall will persist across the Central Appalachians through tonight, potentially leading to areas of flooding. The severe weather and heavy rainfall threat will shift into the lower Great Lakes on Wednesday. Read More >

The month of June turned out to be somewhat cool and dry for southeastern Wisconsin. The month was characterized by several low pressure systems passing just to our south, putting Wisconsin on the cool side of the cyclones and limiting the bulk of the precipitation to northern and central Illinois. Given the cool and dry conditions, it's not surprising that June was also quiet in terms of severe weather. The bulk of the severe weather reports that occurred in the forecast area came from a squall line the pushed through the region in the morning hours of June 22nd.  Other than that, we had a few rogue storms generate some limited wind damage and put down a few hail stones greater than 1" in diameter.

Let's break the month down and see what happened in our most populated areas.

Milwaukee:

The average temperature for June 2015 in Milwaukee was 63.8 degrees. That's over 1 degree below the normal average June temperature of 65 degrees. While 1 degree is not a large difference, June 2015 was still the coolest June in Milwaukee since 2004, when the average June temperature was 63.7 degrees. As was previously mentioned, precipitation was down from normal as well. In June 2015, Milwaukee received 2.49 inches of rain, which is over an inch below the average June precipitation amount of 3.63 inches. Other than the exceedingly dry 2012 when Milwaukee only received 0.9 inches of June rain, the 2.49 inches received this June is the least amount of June precipitation in Milwaukee since 2005.

Madison:

The average temperature for June 2015 in Madison was 67.1 degrees. That's very near the normal June average temperature of 67.3 degrees. Even though the average June temperature was very close to normal in 2015, June 2015 was still the coolest June in Madison since 2009, when the average June temperature was 67 degrees. Like in Milwaukee, June was dry in Madison. In June 2015, Madison received 3.15 inches of rain, which is nearly an inch below the average June precipitation amount of 4.08 inches. Again, other than the very dry 2012 when Madison only received 0.31 inches of rain in June, the 3.15 inches of precipitation received this June is the least amount of June precipitation in Madison since 2006.

Finally, let's have a look at the average June temperatures across the forecast area along with how those averages temperatures differ from normal. You'll notice that much of the forecast was slightly below normal.

Unfortunately, the software used to create precipitation maps similar to the temperature maps above was not working correctly, so those maps will not be provided. However, we can say that the below normal precipitation patterns found in Milwaukee and Madison held across most of the forecast area.
