How dry are we?

We've been hearing a lot chatter about how dry this year has been for southeastern Wisconsin. Many folks have noticed that several of the storm systems this spring and early summer have died out before reaching our portion of the state. So the question on everyone's mind is "Just how dry are we?". It turns out, the answer is dry, but not as dry as you might think.

As you can see to the right, none of Wisconsin has officially been in a drought this year, only a small portion of the state has been classified as abnormally dry. All that said, if you take a look at the graphs at the bottom of the page, nearly all of our official observation sites have indeed recorded below normal precipitation so far this year. Our sites in the far southeast are particularly dry, with Milwaukee around 5" below normal, Racine about 3" below normal, and Kenosha about 4.5" below normal.
