Dangerous Heat Wave Continues; Severe Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain from the Central Plains to the Midwest

A prolonged, dangerous heat wave will continue today in the Midwest and Mississippi Valley, and persist through the Independence Day weekend across the Ohio Valley, Mid-South, and East Coast. A Heat Advisory remains in effect for the area until Saturday evening. Heat indices are expected to reach or exceed 100 degrees for most of the region each afternoon.
Overall, June 2026 ended up near normal for temperatures with variable rainfall across the region.
Very hot conditions along with isolated to scattered afternoon showers and storms can be expected through Sunday. The greatest coverage is generally expected across the higher terrain and along and south of Interstate 40 this afternoon, with lesser coverage in general tomorrow and Sunday. A slight moderation in temperatures will take place next week, returning the region to normal summer heat and continued daily storm chances.
