A frigid cold airmass will bring significantly colder weather across the eastern two thirds of the country early this week. Temperatures will tie or break many records across the Southeast through tonight. Moderate to heavy lake effect snow will continue downwind of the Great Lakes. This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of southwest North
Carolina...east Tennessee and southwest Virginia.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Snow showers will continue today, picking up in coverage and
intensity this afternoon and evening. Storm total snowfall
amounts in excess of 12 inches are possible at or above 5,000 feet
in elevation in the Smokies, with 4-8 inches elsewhere in the
east Tennessee mountains between the Smokies and roughly Sams Gap.
Totals of 1-4 inches can be generally expected in the remainder
of the east Tennessee mountains and higher terrain of southwest
Virginia, with 1-2 inches possible in the northern plateau.

In addition to the snowfall, breezy winds will accompany the cold
temperatures through tonight, leading to wind chill values around
or slightly below zero in the mountains.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Snowfall comes to an end before daybreak Tuesday, but cold
wind chill values around or slightly below zero continue through
the mid morning hours.

Dry conditions with warming temperatures are expected through the
end of the week.
