Heavy Rainfall and Severe Thunderstorm Threats for the Plains and Southeast

A frontal boundary extending from the western High Plains to the Southeast will focus additional showers and thunderstorms this weekend. Some of these storms may become severe, alongside frequent lightning, and isolated instances of flash flooding. July monthly weather report: July was a persistently hot month, while only a few daily records were challenged or tied, the month still ended with being in the top 10 warmest for all three long term observation locations in the three metros. July was also drier than typical in Chattanooga and Knoxville, while the Tri-Cities saw a wetter than typical month, with flooding observed in the Tri-Cities region and into southwestern Virginia.
A classic summer pattern is in store for this weekend, featuring hot and humid conditions. Scattered afternoon pop-up showers and thunderstorms are likely, especially over the mountains, providing brief relief from the heat. Locally heavy rainfall will be possible. This warm and muggy weather with a chance of daily storms will continue right into the start of the new work week on Monday.
