Dangerous Heat in the East; Critical Fire Weather in the Southwest

Dangerous, record-breaking heat will intensify across most of the central and eastern U.S this week. Heat indices will likely exceed 100 degrees. Heat is likely to continue across the eastern U.S. through the Independence Day holiday weekend. After a very cold and very snowy 4 weeks, residents of the Inland Northwest were finally greeted with a warm up. Temperatures rose to above freezing Tuesday night (January 6, 2009). Below are a couple of video loops from local area webcams showing the receeding snow pack.
