Several Rounds of Winter Weather Expected

Several rounds of winter weather are expected through Tuesday.  Primarily snow will fall today, though sleet and freezing rain may mix with the snow (if not change completely) Monday and Tuesday.  Here's a brief overview of what to expect in your neck of the woods.

Today:

A quick-moving clipper will impact mainly the Keweenaw Peninsula and the immediate Lake Superior Shore today.  The highest accumulations are expected along the Keweenaw Peninsula where 3-5" (locally 6") may fall, highest near Copper Harbor. A small shift in system track may significantly increase or decrease snow totals, as the heaviest snow is expected to fall over Lake Superior. Elsewhere across Upper Michigan, generally 1-3" of snow is expected except across the south central where little to no snow may fall.  A tight gradient in snowfall is likely.

Monday and into Tuesday:

A somewhat more prolonged event is expected to occur starting late tonight and lasting potentially through Tuesday.  During this time frame, several rounds of precipitation are expected to occur (e.g. it will not precipitate the entire time).  The majority of the precipitation is expected to fall on Monday, with areas across western and central Upper Michigan seeing moderate snow, and areas across the east experiencing a mix of snow and freezing rain.  At this time, moderate accumulations are possible especially across the west. Late Monday and into Tuesday, freezing drizzle (and even periods of freezing rain) are possible across the central and eastern portions of Upper Michigan.  At this time, it appears possible that some locations may see minor ice accumulations.

Here's our latest thinking:
