A winter storm will affect the region from Saturday night into Monday morning. In Iowa, precipitation is likely to begin as a light wintry mix late Saturday night, with freezing rain possible mainly in northern Iowa. The precipitation will then transition through a wintry mix to snow on Sunday with snow falling into Sunday night before ending. At the same time, winds will turn to blow from the north northwest and increase to 50-60+ MPH. This will cause significant blowing and drifting of snow with near white-out conditions and widespread travel impacts. Be sure to check the latest forecasts and road conditions before any travel!
Plunging temperatures will cause rain to transition to a wintry mix and then snow from northwest to southeast across Iowa on Sunday. A period of light freezing rain is possible, with a light glaze of ice mainly in northern Iowa Sunday morning before the change to snow occurs. Snow may initially be wet and slushy, but then will become fluffier and more blowable as temperatures fall.
As a winter storm crosses the region this weekend, strong winds are forecast once again from Sunday through Sunday night. Gusts will reach 50-60+ mph, resulting in strong crosswinds on roads and blowing about loose objects. This will result in significant blowing and drifting of snow, with near white-out conditions possible.
