Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
1035 AM CDT Thu Jul 18 2019

A relatively narrow area of storms developed across Iowa this morning,
roughly from a line between Waterloo and back to the west and
southwest towards Fort Dodge and Audubon. A cluster of storms around
Iowa Falls produced severe weather including quarter sized hail and
damaging winds. Otherwise, periods of heavy rainfall, lightning, and
pea sized hail were seen by other areas that saw storms this morning.
Overnight lows were on the warm side for many, with many areas of
central and southwest Iowa in the mid to upper 70s. The coolest areas
were across northern Iowa were upper 60s prevailed.

Conditions by mid to late morning were already uncomfortable across
much of the area with temperatures in the low to mid 80s and dew
points already in the mid 70s. Nearly the entire state of Iowa is
expected to see high temperatures today reach 90 or greater, with many
south of Highway 20 expected to see mid to upper 90s. Throw in those
humid conditions and heat index values may reach into the 105 to 110
degree range during the afternoon. The hot and humid conditions will
continue Friday, with similar highs and heat index values expected.
Some relief begins to slide in Saturday across northern areas before
spreading across the state by Sunday and into next week with highs
falling back into the 80s. The next opportunity for widespread rainfall
will also drop down through the state through the weekend.
