Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
506 AM CST Thu Jan 17 2019

A variety of winter weather had occurred across Iowa overnight. Light
snow with patchy freezing drizzle was reported across the west and
north. Visibilities were not impacted much by the snow and ranged
from 2 to 6 miles. Across central and eastern Iowa widespread fog was
noted with visibility from a mile and a half to 3 miles. Southern Iowa
had the most impactful weather with fog that was locally dense at
times and in addition to low visibilities, ice from the fog was being
deposited on surfaces. There was also patchy freezing drizzle and
areas of light snow. All of these things were producing slick
conditions across southern Iowa. Overnight temperatures ranged from 25
to 30 degrees with a west to northwest wind at 5 miles an hour or
less.

The active weather pattern will continue across the Upper Midwest
reminding us that we are very much in winter. A stronger storm system
will impact the region Friday into Saturday bringing widespread 4 to 6
inches of snow to the area with locally higher amounts. This system
will also bring with it strong wind that will produce blowing snow
and very cold temperatures and bitter cold wind chill values. Highs
over the weekend will be in the single digits and teens with overnight
lows in the single digits above and below zero.

Another system will impact the region Monday night into Tuesday
bringing more snow and brisk wind to the region. We will also remain
in the cold air, although it will not be as cold early next week as we
will see over the weekend. Highs early next week will be mainly in
the 20s.
