Last Map Update: Wed, Mar 18, 2026 at 4:54:08 am CDT

Temperatures in the upper-80s to mid-90s are expected from Thursday through Saturday across the Panhandles. Although these temperatures are common through the late spring and summer, it's still only March! That means we have not been exposed to these temperatures in months which makes it potentially hazardous for those susceptible to being affected by heat. Heat Risk takes into account factors such as how much warmer the temperatures are compared to normal, seasonal acclimation, and duration of heat. Considering these factors, Heat Risk is showing a minor Heat Risk for the Panhandles from Thursday through Saturday, with localized areas such as Palo Duro Canyon showing a moderate Heat Risk.
We are in the midst of a warming trend, one in which we will see consecutive days of widespread 90+ degree temperatures on Friday and Saturday. Record highs are forecast for Saturday, some of which may tie or break record highs for the month of March.
Much warmer temperatures are still inbound for the end of the week. Upper 80's to lower 90's are expected on Friday.
Widespread 90 degree high temperatures are expected on Saturday, with several locations in the combined Panhandles forecast to reach the mid and even upper 90's. We cannot rule out 100 degrees at this point, either. However, that will likely be reserved for Panhandle hot spots like the Palo Duro Canyon.
A mostly sunny sky is expected today with temperatures in the 80s across the Panhandles as an upper-level high pressure builds into the area. Winds will be around 10 mph or less throughout the day.
With summer-like temperatures expected this week, it's important to remember some safety tips if you plan to travel to or hike in Palo Duro Canyon, which can get up to 10 degrees warmer than locations outside of the canyon! Please heed these safety tips.
