Extreme Fire Weather Concerns for the Western U.S.; Severe Weather and Flooding Threats for the Central U.S.

Extremely critical fire weather conditions are expected to develop across the Great Basin and Southwest today, and exceptionally dry and windy conditions will promote rapid wildfire spread through the weekend. Scattered severe thunderstorms and heavy rain are possible across parts of the Ozark Plateau into lower Ohio Valley and parts of the northern Rockies into adjacent Great Plains. Read More >

Last Map Update: Sun, Jun 28, 2026 at 2:52:31 am CDT

There is a low chance for thunderstorms to form later this afternoon and into the evening. A few of these storms may become strong to severe, and the primary threat will be wind gusts up to 70 mph.
The timing for potential severe thunderstorms today could start as early as 4 PM, but more likely it'll be between 6 PM to 10 PM.
A little more coverage of storms is anticipated on Sunday in the southeastern Texas Panhandle where chance for rain associated with these storms are around 10% to 35%. While many of us will not see rain, those that do could experience heavy downpours which may lead to a very low threat for localized flooding. There is also a low potential for localized severe storm impacts (level 1 out of 5 threat) with this activity with gusty winds being the main threat.
Widespread triple-digit heat is expected across the Panhandles, with highs ranging from 100°F to 105°F. A heat advisory is in effect for Palo Duro Canyon and Hutchinson county from 12 PM through 10 PM. Drinking plenty of water, wear light clothing, and avoiding strenuous activity during the heat of the day.
Temperatures will be very hot across the Panhandles today and Monday. This brings a major risk for heat illness for those without effective cooling and/or hydration. Be sure to stay hydrated when outdoors. Recognize the signs of heat illness and take appropriate action.
Hot conditions will remain across the Panhandles through the start of this holiday week with multiple locations seeing near or above triple-digit highs There will also be a 20 to 30% chance of thunderstorms each afternoon with a very low chance to see severe weather each day.
Temperatures in the Palo Duro Canyon can be up to 5-10 degrees hoter than the surrounding areas. But, Palo Duro can be enjoyed safely in the heat, but safety precautions should be taken! Make sure to follow these safety guidelines, and adhere to any park shutdowns for heat safety.
