The NOAA Weather Radio system inside National Weather Service Offices has been nearly the same for 15 years. The technology has become very outdated, requiring a replacement to the system.  All National Weather Service Offices over the course of this summer are upgrading to a system called Broadcast Message Handler (or BMH) and is incorporated within AWIPS, which has many benefits:

  • Much more condensed in terms of hardware, saving both space and in heat production
  • More stability
  • A new voice which brings in technological advances that have been made to Text-to-Speech technology
  • Future upgrades can be made more quickly
