| George Washington was born on Feb. 22, 1732 according to the calendar we now use. But according to the Old Style Calendar then in use, his birth date was Feb. 11. Americans celebrated Washington's birthday in the late 18th century, while he was still alive, some on the 11th and some on the 22nd. In 1885, Washington's birthday, Feb. 22, became a federal holiday. In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved the official observance of Washington's birthday from Feb. 22 to the third Monday in February. Some reformers had wanted to change the name of the holiday as well, to Presidents' Day, in honor of both Lincoln and Washington, but that proposal was rejected by Congress, and the holiday remained officially Washington's Birthday. On January 1, 1971 the federal holiday was shifted to the third Monday in February by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. For more information, see the National Archives. |
