Beginning Monday, April 18, 2022, the KDVN WSR-88D radar operated by the NOAA National Weather Service in the Quad Cities will be down for approximately two weeks as part of the Service Life Extension Program (SLEP).

During the downtime, adjacent radars include: KDMX (Des Moines, IA), KARX (La Crosse, WI), KMKX (Milwaukee/Sullivan, WI), KLOT (Chicago/Romeoville, IL), KILX (Lincoln, IL), KLSX (St. Louis, MO) and KEAX (Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, MO).  For direct access to any of these surrounding radar sites, go to the following web page:  http://radar.weather.gov

DETAILS OF THE UPGRADE:

In this part of the upgrade, the pedestal will be replaced. The pedestal is the piece of equipment that turns and positions the radar dish to capture data in all directions.  The pedestal was designed for a 25 year lifespan and has exceeded that lifespan.  Replacing the pedestal will keep the radar functioning for another 20 years or more.

This is the third of five major upgrades to the radar as part of SLEP. The first two were the installation of a new signal processor and a transmitter refurbishment, which were completed over the past three years. The last project is the refurbishment of the equipment shelters which should be completed in 2023.

The KDVN WSR-88D is part of a network of 159 operational Doppler radars.  The Radar Operations Center in Norman, Oklahoma, provides life cycle management and support for all WSR-88Ds.
