Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I get a spotter ID number? The NWS Office in Kansas City has not issued Spotter ID Numbers since the late 1980s/early 1990s. We do not assign spotter ID numbers.

  • I completed a spotter training class/presentation. How do I register with NWS Kansas City. We no longer maintain a spotter database, there is no need to register with our office. Thousands of individuals have completed spotter training over the past 40 years and with the advent of the internet and widespread ways of reporting severe weather, it has become difficult and unnecessary to maintain a detailed database of spotters. If you have completed a training class; in person or virtually with our office, another NWS Office, or through MetEd, you are considered trained. When reporting to our office, we kindly ask you identify yourself as a trained spotter.

  • How do I identify myself when reporting to the NWS? When providing reports via social media or over the phone, we kindly ask you identify yourself as a trained spotter.

  • I recently moved to the region and I completed spotter training with another office, what do I need to do? You do not need to re-take spotter training from our office. We only encourage you to identify yourself as a trained spotter when you contact our office with a report.
