2024 Monthly/Annual Weather Recap/Extremes for Grand Island, Hastings, and Kearney:
In the Nebraska Tri Cities, a few of the top weather/climate stories during 2024 included:
- A cold and snowy January...although the worst of the cold was highly concentrated during the middle-third of the month
- An incredibly-mild February...3rd-warmest on record at all 3 sites
- A very dry September...among Top-5 Driest at all 3 sites
- Considerably MORE ANNUAL PRECIPITATION versus 2023 at Grand Island and to a lesser extent Hastings...Grand Island received an incredible 11.93" MORE PRECIPITATION than during 2023!

Grand Island - 2024 Monthly Data/Annual Extremes at Central Nebraska Regional Airport (GRI):
Nearly all data is from the official automated ASOS sensor. The only routine exception involves all snowfall measurements and some associated liquid equivalent (melted snow), which is measured manually by our official NWS observer near the airport. All data is collected on a "calendar day" basis (midnight-to-midnight CST).

Kearney - 2024 Monthly Data/Annual Extremes from NWS COOP Observer at Kearney Airport (KRNN1):
- PLEASE NOTE: ALL data is from the OFFICIAL NWS Cooperative Observer located at Kearney Regional Airport. Unlike the automated ASOS systems at Grand Island/Hastings, this data is not collected on a true "calendar day" (midnight-to-midnight) basis, but instead is from once-daily observations taken around 7am (covering the 24 hours since 7am the previous day).
- Although the automated AWOS at the airport (KEAR) also collects weather data, NWS Hastings considers this data UNOFFICIAL for various reasons, namely:
- 1) this is not an NWS-maintained ASOS system (such as Grand Island/Hastings), and thus NWS Hastings lacks the ability to "dial in" to collect data during potential communications outages
- 2) the precipitation sensor is not designed to accurately melt most snowfall, and because manual snowfall measurements are only taken ONCE DAILY at 7am (instead of four times a day, including at Midnight CST such as at Grand Island/Hastings), there is often no way to accurately determine true CALENDAR DAY precipitation/snowfall during the winter months.
