Severe Weather and Heavy Rain from the Great Lakes to the Mid-Atlantic; Heat Persists in the East

Widespread strong thunderstorms with damaging winds and locally heavy rain are expected from the Upper Ohio Valley into the southern Mid-Atlantic today and portions of the central Appalachians and Carolinas on Saturday. The Fourth of July climatology for selected cities across eastern Utah and western Colorado shows that the Fourth can either be exceedingly hot (in the triple digits) or cooler and wetter with over an inch of rain falling in some areas! We shouldn't be breaking any precipitation or temperature records this year as southwest flow aloft keeps conditions dry, breezy and seasonably warm.
