Overview

A prolonged winter storm affected the Southern Plains on January 23rd through the 25th.  This was a far reaching storm that brought hazardous winter weather from the Texas Panhandle through the Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee Valleys and finally across the Eastern Seaboard. While this storm produced crippling ice accumulation to many of these areas, central and eastern Kansas saw all snow.  In fact, it snowed for 40 straight hours in Wichita with most locations picking up between 4 and 8 inches.

Even more impressive than the snow, was the extreme cold air that spilled south across the Plains.  Nine temperature records were either set or tied during the January 23rd through January 26th time frame.  Both Russell and Salina saw low temperatures of -16 during this time frame with widespread wind chills in the 10 to 20 below zero range.
