National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

On October 24th 2016, the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Lake Charles, in conjunction with the West Gulf River Forecast Center in Fort Worth, will begin issuing river forecast and warning services for the Neches River at the Saltwater Barrier near Beaumont, Texas (station ID NSBT2).

This new forecast point will provide services to replace the old Weiss Bluff Forecast point (WBFT2), covering portions of Hardin, Jefferson, Jasper and Orange Counties along the Neches River.

The criteria will be based on the following thresholds:
-Action Stage: 3.5 feet
-Flood Stage: 4.0 feet
-Moderate Flood Stage: 6.0 feet
-Major Flood Stage: 8.0 feet

Eventually it is envisioned this new location will replace the Beaumont forecast point (BEAT2) as well at some point in the future.

The main reason for the consolidation is reliable real-time data availability at the Salt Water Barrier provided by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Lower Neches Valley Authority (LNVA).

The data is available at: https://www.weather.gov/lch under the Rivers and Lakes section.
