Flooding Threat Continues in Portions of Texas; Poor Air Quality in the Great Lakes through the Mid-Atlantic

Widespread life-threatening flash and urban flooding continues in south-central Texas, with considerable flooding impacts possible across central Texas. Wildfire smoke is impacting air quality across much of the Great Lakes region into southern New England and the Mid-Atlantic. On December 28, 2011, Susan Spears of the National Weather Service, Midland/Odessa presented a Department of Commerce Honored Institution Award to Mr. Don Sitton of KPET radio in Lamesa, Texas for 50 years of service to the Cooperative Observer program.

Observations at KPET radio station started back on April 1, 1961, with Mr. Sitton taking over the observing responsibilities in 1989.

The National Weather Service office in Midland would like to thank KPET radio and Mr. Don Sitton for their many years of service. Congratulations on this great accomplishment and thank you for your support to the National Weather Service.
