THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN CHARLESTON WV HAS CONFIRMED A
TORNADO NEAR PALESTINE IN WIRT COUNTY WEST VIRGINIA ON SEPTEMBER
16 2010.

SIGNIFICANT TREE DAMAGE WAS NOTED ALONG PORTIONS OF STATE ROUTE 5
ESE OF PALESTINE. NUMEROUS HARDWOODS WERE TOPPED HALFWAY DOWN
THEIR TRUNKS. SEVERAL VERY LARGE SOFTWOODS WERE EITHER TOPPED
HALFWAY DOWN THEIR TRUNKS OR UPROOTED. THE ORIENTATION OF THE
DOWNED TREES CONFORMED TO A BROAD CONVERGING DAMAGE PATTERN. A FEW
SMALL OUTBUILDINGS WERE ALSO DESTROYED...WITH SEVERAL RESIDENCES
RECEIVING MINOR TO MODERATE DAMAGE.

THERE WAS ALSO DAMAGE ASSOCIATED WITH A DOWNBURST ALONG STATE
ROUTE 14 JUST SOUTH OF PALESTINE. SCATTERED TREE DAMAGE WAS NOTED
ALONG WITH SOME MINOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. MAXIMUM WINDS WERE
ESTIMATED AT 75 MPH.
