Heat and Fire Weather Concerns in the West

Heat will build over the Intermountain West and the Southwest the next couple of days. Lightning from dry thunderstorms can create new fire starts and combined with gusty winds may cause a fire to rapidly grow in Oregon and northern California. A slight risk for severe weather will exist across portions of northeast Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas into Sunday night. Severe weather threats will focus on damaging winds, but a large hail threat may also exist with a few storms. Heavy downpours can be expected as well, with a localized flash flooding threat. Remain alert for changing weather conditions if you have outdoor plans and be prepared to seek immediate shelter indoors if thunderstorms threaten.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop across portions of east central Oklahoma into northwest Arkansas mid afternoon Monday, eventually moving into southeast Oklahoma and west central Arkansas through mid evening. The strongest storms will be capable of producing damaging winds and heavy rain. Localized flash flooding will be a concern.

Hot conditions persist across eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas into the upcoming week. Please know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. To avoid heat illness, wear loose-fitting and light-colored clothing, stay hydrated, and take breaks when outdoors.

Rain and thunderstorm chances continue into the upcoming week. Any storms that develop may produce dangerous lightning, locally heavy rainfall, and gusty winds. Hail may occasionally be a concern with the strongest storms, as well.
