We’re looking at a prolonged period of quiet, mostly beautiful weather across the plains, at least for the next 6 days. With high pressure settling in, those heavy coats might be staying in the closet this week as we see highs reaching the 60s and 70s. What to watch for: Outdoor Plans: It’s a great week for hiking or yard work, but remember the ground is extremely dry. Fire Risk: "Light" winds don't mean "zero" risk. Be cautious with cigarettes, trailer chains, and equipment given how dry and dormant the grasses are. Today: Some mid to high level cloud cover will move across the area. Keep an eye out for a stray sprinkle, but you might have better luck counting the sprinkles than actually measuring any rain. There are some signals that things may change in 7 days with a potential for the return of precipitation chances. For now, only looking at up to 20 percent chance next Wednesday into Wednesday evening. A lot can change before then so check back for updates to the forecast.
December has been a record warm and dry month. All climate sites have broken their record warmest temperature for the month of December. Dalhart had its warmest December on record. Rankings are based on the average temperature.
Area grasses are dormant and very dry across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, increasing the risk for accidental ignitions and the spread of wildfires. Please follow wildfire safety, obey burn bans, and give our first responders a break!
The Panhandles experienced a notably active year in 2025, culminating in a total of 433 severe thunderstorm warnings issued. This included approximately 62 tornado warnings and 36 flash flood warnings throughout the year. Conversely, warnings for other weather phenomena were less frequent, with only 19 Red Flag warnings, 3 winter storm warnings, and 6 high wind warnings issued.
