National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

On Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at 9:00AM EDT, the National Weather Service in Gaylord will be implementing changes to the Public and Fire Weather Forecast Zones encompassing eastern Upper Michigan as well as Beaver Island in northern Lake Michigan.  These changes are being implemented in order to provide improved forecast services to these areas by allowing for more fine-tuned warnings and advisories for various hazards, particularly during the cold season.  A summary of these changes are as follows:

  • Chippewa County will be split into three zones (Western/Central/Southeast)
  • Mackinac County will be split into two "mainland" zones (Western/Eastern). Mackinac Island and Bois Blanc Island will be combined into a separate new zone.
  • Beaver Island will be separated into its own zone apart from "mainland" Charlevoix County.
