Severe Weather Threat Shifted to the Southern Plains and Mid-South; Critical Fire Weather in the Southern Plains

Multiple rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms may produce very large hail, swaths of damaging wind, a few tornadoes and heavy rain across parts of Texas into the lower Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys. It was a very warm 2024 for La Crosse and Rochester with both locations recording a top 3 record for yearly temperature. Interestingly, the warmth had little to do with any summer hot periods, rather it was very mild winter and fall conditions. Precipitation was a bit over 2" above normal at La Crosse and Rochester in 2024. Despite this, of more note was an over 30 day stretch of dry conditions that occurred in late September through mid October. For more details:
