A potent storm system moved out of southern Kansas into the southern Great Lakes from Wednesday evening, February 15th into Thursday evening, February 16th. Snow began to spread from west to east during the evening hours of the 15th with many areas reporting 1-3 inches of snow by daybreak on the 16th.
As the storm system intensified on Thursday, February 16th, snow increased in intensity and coverage. Ample moisture and a tight temperature gradient across the region helped fuel the storm which produced a wide area of 5-8 inch snowfall, with isolated 9 inch reports. Snow accumulated rapidly on the morning of the 16th in southwest Wisconsin where sleet was mixed in from time to time. Elsewhere, southwest to northeast orientated bands of snow kept forming and reforming during the day bringing a prolonged but steady snowfall which ended up meeting warning criteria in most locations.
North to northwest winds also increased as the storm exited the region leading to significant blowing and drifting, especially in open and higher areas. Temperatures fell significantly on the 17th behind the storm with dangerous wind chills.
