Recent Bitter Cold: A Climate Perspective

Why so cold the last couple weeks? Let's put our science hats on for a minute and look at some upper level circulations that are behind much of our recent bitter cold.

Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) - There is a clear signal that the MJO over the western Pacific is enhancing the northerly flow into the region. This is helping bring the Arctic air south into the Upper Mississippi River Valley.
La Niña - Since the winter of 1949-50, 16 out of the 22 La Niñas have had Februaries which have averaged much colder-than-normal in both La Crosse WI and Rochester, MN. Here is the January 14, 2021 update on this La Niña event.
Sudden Stratospheric Warming - In mid-January, there was a warming event in the stratosphere. This resulted in a splitting of the tropospheric polar vortex. One of the these areas of anomalous cold air has moved south into the region.
