June 22, 2015 Severe Storms

Photos Storm Reports Rainfall Reports

A complex of strong to severe thunderstorms moved through the area during the early morning hours of June 22, 2015 and produced a combination of large hail, damaging wind, flooding, and likely a few tornadoes.

Wind damage, some extreme, was most prevelent across northeast Iowa into southern Wisconsin.  There were three (3) confirmed tornadoes, but more may be documented as additional information is gathered.

The tornado information includes:

  • Fayette Co., IA (Maynard 4SE to Maynard 5SE) - EF1 (100-110 mph) (Click here for prelim. map)
  • Crawford Co., WI (Between Wauzeka and Steuben) - EF0 (80 mph)
  • Crawford & Richland Co., WI (Near Port Andrew) - EF0 (80mph)

Other damage in Clayton County, IA and Grant County, WI appears to be caused by straight line wind, but this is preliminary.  At the very least, damage indicates peak wind speeds may have exceeded 100 mph at times.  Most of the damage relates to winds in the 60 to 80 mph range.  The airport at Dubuque, IA measured a wind gust of 72 mph when the storms passed at 9:15 a.m. CDT.

In addition to the strong winds, flooding materialized after 2 to 5 inches of rain fell in a short period of time. A combination of flash flood and river flood warnings had been issued.

It was an odd time of day for severe thunderstorms as well - occuring between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. across our area.
