Severe Thunderstorms in the Central U.S.; Record Temperatures Likely for Eastern U.S.

Several rounds of severe thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecast from the southern Plains to the Midwest through Friday. Large hail, damaging wind gusts, and tornadoes are possible. A significant warm-up is expected for much of the Eastern U.S. into next week. Several daily record temperature records are likely to be broken.   • 8650 ft - Canyon Creek Summit (highest point on ridge to west of highway)
  • 8500 ft - Canyon Creek Raws Site
  • 7100 ft - Banner Summit RAWS site
  • 7037 ft - Banner Summit Pass Elevation
  • 6014 ft - Fox Trail Ridge RAWS site
  • 4850 ft - Grandjean turnoff
  • 3800 ft - Lowman
Most concern is between the Grandjean turnoff (and closure gate) and Banner Summit, where the highway rises 2200 ft in approximately 11 miles.
The ridge to the WEST of the highway ranges from 7000-8650 ft
The ridge to the EAST of the highway ranges from 8500-9200 ft
