On the morning of September 1, 2016, technicians at the NWS office in Des Moines installed a new azimuth motor at the base of the WSR-88D radar located in Johnston, Iowa. There are two main motors, called the azimuth and elevation motors, that control the radar movement. As their names imply, the azimuth motor controls the turning motion of the pedestal and the elevation motor raises and lowers the dish. This replacement will ensure continued operation of the radar for years to come.
