Lala Impacting Hawaii; Flash Flooding Risks; Excessive Heat

Lala will continue to impact Hawaii through the weekend. Heavy rainfall, strong winds, dangerous surf and localized flooding are expected. Thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and flash flooding concerns from the mid-Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley into the central Appalachians and the mid-Atlantic through today. Veterans Day (Armistice Day) happens to be a very unique day weather-wise in the QCA.

In 1911, a tornado touched down 1 mile west of Davenport around 1 pm.  Later that afternoon, the temperature topped out at 76, which set the record high for the date.  This record was later tied in 1964.  By midnight that night, the temperature had plummeted 62 degrees for a daily low of only 14F!  This is just three degrees shy of the current record low for the date (11 set in 2019)!  Of note, Oklahoma City, OK set both its record high (83) and record low temperature (17) for the date.  This still stands today!

Veterans Day 1940 is more known for the sudden onset of winter conditions (especially over northwest Iowa and Minnesota), which caught many people off-guard resulting in numerous frostbite injuries and dozens of fatalities.
