Severe Thunderstorms, Heavy Rainfall and Dangerous Heat

Severe thunderstorms are expected today and Friday from the upper Midwest, central Great Lakes into the Ohio and mid-Mississippi Valley's. In addition, heavy rainfall threat increases on Friday across the Ohio Valley. A rare, near full solar eclipse will occur across the entire region in the early afternoon of August 21, 2017.  A full eclipse axis centerline will occur from St Joseph, Missouri to just south of Columbia to south of St Louis in a 60 plus mile swath.  Here's some specifics for our forecast area of Eastern Iowa, Northwest Illinois and extreme Northeastern Missouri.

  • The eclipse will start around 11:45 AM
  • The max near full eclipse will occur between 1:10-1:16 PM
  • The eclipse will end around 2:35 PM
  • The maximum coverage of the eclipse will range from about 88% in Freeport, Illinois to roughly 97% at Memphis, Missouri with the region around the I-80 corridor experiencing a max coverage near 91%.

Next Monday's broad forecast for our area:  Cloud Coverage...Partly Cloudy;   Precipitation Chances...20 to 40%;    Confidence...LOW.  

CAUTION:  This forecast will improve between this Friday and next Monday.
