Tracking Late December Winter Storm Expected to Impact the Northern Plains through the Northeast U.S.

A winter storm system will rapidly intensify over the Midwest on Sunday and track through the Great Lakes on Monday. Periods of heavy snow are anticipated across the Upper Great Lakes late Sunday and continuing into Monday. Strong winds behind a cold front are expected to spread across North and Central Texas this afternoon and persist through the overnight hours. Sustained winds of 25-35 mph are expected with wind gusts as strong as 50 mph.
A strong cold front will dive southward across North and Central Texas this afternoon and evening. Ahead of the front, expect one more day of near record warm temperatures with highs in the upper 70s and low 80s. There will also be a low chance (20-30%) for rain along and east of the I-35 corridor along and ahead of this front. Behind the front, very strong winds gusting to 50 mph are expected. Temperatures will quickly drop this evening and tonight as well, morning lows around or just above freezing Monday morning.
Behind Sunday's cold front, there will be much colder air in place across North and Central Texas. Monday will only see highs in the 40s, with lows again dropping near or below freezing Monday night. While temperatures will continue to warm throughout this upcoming week, expect the first half of the week to be near or below average temperature wise with highs by Wednesday in the 55 to 60 degree range.
This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the fatal December 26, 2015 tornado outbreak. 12 tornadoes and 13 fatalities unfortunately occurred, most of which were with the Sunnyvale-Garland-Rowlett EF-4. Only 13 other years have recorded at least 1 tornado in the month of December acorss North and Central Texas, and it ranks 4th for the number of tornadoes in a 24-hour period in December for our area.
