Additional rounds of wintry weather are expected this afternoon, tonight, and early Sunday morning. Scattered sleet showers and freezing rain can be expected through the afternoon. Coverage will increase tonight with sleet and freezing rain being the main precipitation types. Freezing rain will be most likely across our Central TX counties, while sleet will mainly fall to the north. A transition to snow will likely occur across parts of the area late tonight into early Sunday morning before tapering off around midday.
Dangerous cold will continue into early next week with lows falling to near 0 degrees and wind chills as low as -11 degrees. This is cold enough to be life threatening if caught outside. Pack extra blankets in your car if you're travelling. Protect outdoor exposed pipes and stream water in faucets. Bring pets indoors. Temperatures will warm above freezing Tuesday afternoon.
Temperatures will remain below freezing through early Tuesday across the entire region with lows dropping down to near 0 degrees in some locations Sunday night. Wind chills will drop to -10 degrees at times. This is dangerous cold for anyone caught outside. Make sure to keep blankets in your car if travelling. Bring pets inside. Stream water from faucets and cover any exposed pipes. Temperatures will warm above freezing Tuesday afternoon.
A Winter Storm Warning and Ice Storm Warning continues through early Sunday for all of North and Central Texas. Sleet and freezing rain will lead to accumulations on area roads and bridges. Ice may accumulate on trees and power lines causing power outages. Sleet accumulations of 2 to 3 inches will be possible across parts of North Texas through early Sunday morning.
Another round of wintry precipitation is expected this evening through the overnight hours. Additional sleet and snow accumulations of 2 to 3 inches will be possible northwest of the Metroplex through Sunday. Areas to the south will see more sleet and freezing rain with accumulations less than an inch, but more ice. All of the wintry precipitation will taper off during the day Sunday.
Areas of moderate to heavy icing will impact trees, powerlines, and roads. With a threat for power outages, get your emergency kit ready, check on neighbors/family, and prepare your home for winter weather!
As bitterly cold temperatures arrive this weekend, small bodies of water may freeze over. Frozen bodies of water such as ponds, pools, & hot tubs may look solid, but the ice is weak and unstable. Stay off the ice! If you fall into freezing cold water, hypothermia can ensue rapidly. Also, use extra caution when walking on slippery roads and sidewalks, and wear footwear with proper traction.
