In short, a dry microburst is an intense area of winds from a column of descending air caused by rain that evaporates before reaching the ground. This is what resulted in the 111 MPH record wind gust at Midland International Air & Space Port and snapped power poles in Odessa Tuesday evening.
There is a chance of strong to severe storms from the Stockton Plateau into Permian Basin this evening. Main threats are large hail and damaging winds, but a tornado or two cannot be ruled out. Scattered to broken cloud cover overnight with warmer than average temperatures for this time of year are forecast.
