Lake Effect Snow through Friday; Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms and Mountain Snow in California

Periods of moderate to heavy lake effect snow will continue through Friday downwind of Lake Erie and Ontario. Several additional inches of accumulating snow are expected. A Pacific storm will bring heavy rain and mountain snow across California, the Southwest and Intermountain West today. THANKSGIVING 2010 TORNADOES

Overview

A deepening low over the north central U.S. moved eastward over the Great Lakes during the morning of November 25. An associated cold front pushed southward through the Great Plains into southwest Louisiana. Conditions ahead of the front were only marginally suitable for the development of severe weather, with modest instability levels and weak wind shear aloft. Nevertheless, one thunderstorm developed that produced at least seven tornadoes across southwest and south central Louisiana. Dozens of homes were damaged or destroyed along a path from Jennings, Louisiana to near Opelousas, Louisiana, resulting in one injury. Five of these tornadoes were rated EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, with two rated EF0.
