...NWS DAMAGE SURVEY FOR 06/07/14 THUNDERSTORM WIND EVENT

.OVERVIEW...

A SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORM CAUSED A PATH OF DESTRUCTIVE WINDS ACROSS
PORTIONS OF THE NORTHWEST SOUTH PLAINS BETWEEN MULESHOE AND SUDAN
LATE SATURDAY EVENING. AN NWS SURVEY TEAM DETERMINED SIGNIFICANT
STRAIGHT-LINE WIND DAMAGE ASSOCIATED WITH THE REAR FLANK DOWNDRAFT
OF THE SUPERCELL...ASSOCIATED WITH THE TRACK OF THE MESOCYCLONE.

SURVEY SUMMARY:
U.S. NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS SURVEYED
THE TRACK OF STRAIGHT-LINE WIND DAMAGE ASSOCIATED WITH A SUPERCELL
THUNDERSTORM...OTHERWISE KNOWN AS A REAR FLANK DOWNDRAFT. THE DOWNDRAFT
WINDS ORIGINATED JUST EAST OF THE MULESHOE CITY LIMITS AND ENDED NORTH
OF THE COMMUNITY OF SUDAN. MAXIMUM WINDS...BASED ON STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO THE
TRACK DAIRY AND SURROUNDING HOMES AND EQUIPMENT...WAS ESTIMATED BETWEEN 80
AND 90 MPH. MOST OF THE WIND DAMAGE OCCURRED ALONG AND NORTH OF U.S. HIGHWAY
84. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO HUMANS BUT EIGHT HEAD OF CATTLE AT THE FEEDLOT
PERISHED FROM INJURIES DUE TO IMPACT BY DEBRIS. AN ADDITIONAL 30-40 HEAD OF
CATTLE WERE ALSO INJURED. SOME DAMAGE TO A MOBILE HOME...HORSE BARN...AND FARM
EQUIPMENT OCCURRED ALONG FM 3269 WEST OF THE DAIRY. DAMAGE APPEARED TO BEGIN
WHERE TREE LIMBS FROM 1-3" IN DIAMETER WERE BROKEN ALONG U.S. 70 EAST OF MULESHOE.
MUCH OF THE SUPERCELL PATH WAS THROUGH RURAL AREAS WITH FEW IF ANY VISUAL
DAMAGE INDICATORS MAKING ANY ATTEMPT AT ADDITIONAL CIRCULATION OR TORNADO
DAMAGE INCONCLUSIVE. THE DAMAGE PATH OF THE WIND ENDED NORTH OF SUDAN ALONG
FM 303 WHERE A CENTER PIVOT WAS OVERTURNED.
