Strong winds and widespread blowing dust sweep across West Texas |

A large and powerful storm system emerging from the Intermountain West, provided an overabundance of wind and dust for the southern High Plains. Winds initially increased to solidly breezy levels as the storm system approached Sunday morning (24 March), but turned downright nasty through the afternoon as intense wind fields at all levels of the troposphere spread across the region behind a Pacific cold front. |

| The front brought little in the way of cooling, but did carry in much drier air from New Mexico and Far West Texas through Sunday afternoon. In addition, portions of New Mexico, Far West Texas and northern parts of Mexico made an unwelcomed and uninvited visit to the South Plains region, in the form of a thick blanket of blowing dust. At times, the dust caused the visibility to drop below 2 miles, and in some locations, even under a mile. | |

| The miserable conditions were spurred on by wind gusts of 50 to 60+ mph. The most intense winds, gusting from 60 to 70 mph, targeted the western and northwestern South Plains into the southern Texas Panhandle. A peak gust of 77 mph was measured by the West Texas Mesonet near Sundown. | |

| The fierce winds did cause damage in spots, including toppling a pontoon (above) and damaging a shed in western Lubbock County. Many tree limbs were downed, while reports of uprooted trees were also reported. | |

| When the Pacific front and stronger lift encountered better low-level moisture, scattered thunderstorms erupted and tracked quickly eastward over portions of the Rolling Plains. A few of these storms strengthened to severe levels, producing hail and even a couple of tornadoes in the region. One tornado touched down in Perryton, in the northeast Texas Panhandle, with another tornado confirmed north of Lake Kemp, in western North Texas. | |

The thunderstorm that went on to produce a tornado north of Lake Kemp initially got its act together while tracking through the central Rolling Plains, over King County, just north of Guthrie. This storm likely produced at least small hail, though we did not receive any ground truth reports. One weaker storm that moved over Childress did produce a brief period of pea size hail. |

Altogether, rain was spotty and on the light side, but a few locations in the Rolling Plains and southeast Texas Panhandle did get a quick quarter inch or so. Wind reports collected from this windy, dusty and fiery stretch in late March 2024 can found below: |
