Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day is a Federal holiday and traditionally observed the last Monday of May.  It is the day to honor and remember those that have died in service to our nation.  Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5th,1868 by Major General John A. Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic and first observed May 30th, 1868. Congress made Memorial day into a three-day weekend with the National Holiday Act of 1971 and the official May 30th date was changed to the last Monday in May.  In addition to remembrance, Memorial Day is also the unofficial beginning of the swim and vacation season; a time for picnics, parades, family gatherings, and camping.
