This is the entrance of your National Weather Service office located on the grounds of Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY, which is on eastern Long Island (indicated by KOKX on the map below). It is from here that official National Weather Service forecasts and warnings are issued. Over two dozen people work inside, keeping a watchful eye to the sky for both good and bad weather. This office serves southeastern New York State, northeastern New Jersey, and southern Connecticut.
In 1993, the National Weather Service moved from its old office in New York City to this modernized facility in Upton. Placement of the office was governed, in part, by the range of the radar, about 250 miles.
Nationally, there are 122 forecast offices like this one, as well as 13 River Forecast Centers. The NWS also operates 21 aviation support Center Weather Service Units and various National and Regional Support Centers.
